CEO update from recent Build UK meeting

Last week, I attended a Build UK dinner and the Build UK Trade Association meeting the following day. It was good to mix with main contractors at dinner for informal networking, but even better, that for the first time, several main contractor representatives attended the meeting, including Mark Castle, MACE’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer, who is the current Build UK Chair.

It is a good development in improving communication between the specialist and main contractors and I am pleased to say that the meeting was overwhelmingly positive. Mark and the other main contractors all recognised their roles in taking responsibility to change the culture in construction, and to strive to produce quality buildings, to quality designs, and get it right first time – rather than starting projects with incomplete specifications and expecting huge snagging bills post completion. We all have responsibility of course to do the best job that we can, and it was agreed that clients have a really important role in expecting and demanding quality work, rather than always looking for the cheapest price. Collecting and publicising best practice case studies where there has been investment up front leading to long-term cost benefits will help to convince people to look further ahead when it comes to efficiency.  You may say we’ve heard it all before, but I hope that this time, we will do something about it. We all have a role to play in the way we do business. We can all do something to change the status quo. It’s not going to be easy – but I think there is finally a real enthusiasm for change. I hope I am right. What will you do to make it happen?
