UKGBC Welcomes Government prioritisation of the Climate Change brief

We pick up where we left off last year with Greg Clarke and Claire Perry still at BEIS. In fact, we are hopeful that Claire Perry’s promotion to Cabinet signals an upgrade and prioritisation of the Climate Change brief. The Government’s ambitious long-term strategy with the 25 Year Environment Plan gives us more reasons to be cheerful. Launched by the PM last week, it aims to position issues like air quality, waste and climate change at the heart of government policy making. In particular, the principle that all development should provide an ‘environmental net gain’ raises the tantalising prospect that high-quality, low-impact new buildings will become a key objective of government policy. Coming hot on the heels of the Clean Growth Strategy and the Industrial Strategy white paper, it’s starting to look like the Government has had something of an epiphany on green growth over the past few months. Of course, the usual caveats apply about how much of the ambition will actually be turned into policy action, and the CCC’s analysis of the Clean Growth Strategy shows there’s still a lot of work to be done there. But credit to the Government on sticking its neck out on these issues again, and we can hopefully expect plenty of new policy to keep us busy this year.
