Position Summary:

Lula, a fast-growing Proptech startup in the Kansas City area, is seeking a Head of Design (Player-Coach) to lead and expand our design function. This unique position combines strategic leadership with active, hands-on product design. The ideal candidate will shape product vision, mentor and develop design team members, and directly contribute to the design and launch of innovative solutions within a dynamic, high-growth startup environment.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Define and drive Lula’s overall design vision, strategy, and standards in close partnership with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and company leadership.
  • Lead and mentor a small, but ambitious design team, promoting a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and growth.
  • Collaborate directly with cross-functional teams to conceptualize, iterate, and ship high-quality designs for web and mobile platforms.
  • Balance leadership and individual contribution , spending significant time on hands-on product design tasks such as prototyping, wireframing, and UX/UI creation.
  • Champion user-centered design across Lula’s products while refining processes, design systems, and best practices.
  • Influence product roadmap and business strategy as the voice of design, representing user needs and brand values.
  • Set up design workflow rhythms, tools, and documentation to support both personal contribution and team scaling.
  • Foster an environment that encourages creativity, innovation, and rapid problem-solving, modeling the “player-coach” approach through example.

Role Requirements:

  • 6+ years of product or UX design experience, including 2+ years in a design leadership or management role.
  • Demonstrated success delivering end-to-end design for web and mobile products in a fast-paced startup setting.
  • Proven ability to balance team leadership with hands-on design contributions.
  • Expertise in modern design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Strong portfolio highlighting impactful, shipped product design work.
  • Excellent communicator and collaborator across design, product, engineering, and stakeholders.

  • Day shift
  • Monday - Friday
  • Preferred in-office located in Overland Park, KS (open to remote for the right candidate)

Salary: $125,000.00 - $175,000.00 per year
