About the Role

The Director of Special Education is a key member of the instructional leadership team, responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of special education services. This role ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and promotes best practices in inclusive education. The Director will lead a team of special education teachers and support staff, collaborating closely with general education teachers, administrators, and families to support student success.​

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Leadership: Develop and oversee the special education program, ensuring alignment with Emblaze Academy's mission and compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and ADA requirements.
  • Staff Supervision: Support, train, and evaluate special education staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • IEP Management: Ensure timely and accurate development, implementation, and monitoring of IEPs, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and families.
  • Data Analysis: Monitor student progress through data collection and analysis, using insights to inform instruction and interventions.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the STEM and Humanities Directors and general education teachers to support inclusive practices and co-teaching, offering guidance on accommodations and modifications.
  • Family Engagement: Maintain open and regular communication with families regarding student progress, services, and supports.
  • Professional Development: Design and deliver training for staff on special education topics, including instructional strategies, compliance, and equity.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Maintain accurate records and documentation, ensuring readiness for audits and reporting requirements.​

Qualifications
  • Education: Master's degree in Special Education (preferred).
  • Certification: New York State certification in Special Education (required)
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in special education, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Skills: Strong knowledge of special education laws and best practices; excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to lead and motivate a team.
