The Grenfell disaster in June 2017 resulted in research and recommendations to reform the construction industry by Dame Judith Hackett. As a consequence, 13 Working Groups were set up by the Competence Steering Group (CSG) to respond to these complex challenges and SPRA have been active members of both Working Group 2-Installers and Working Group 12-Products as well as involvement with the Marketing Integrity Group. In 2019 the Working Groups published and presented their own report, Raising the Bar (Improving Competence, Building a Safer Future) which more clearly identified what needed to be done to improve the industry through culture change and always a focus on safe buildings with competency at the core. The working groups are now focused on digging into the detail and looking at how recommendations can be achieved. As a consequence, Working Group 2 has established a number of small sub-groups that can move forward quickly and SPRA is pleased to announce that Cathie Clarke has been elected as Chair of the sub-group looking at CSCS, third party card schemes and competence. The group met formerly for the first time this week and has already got started on agreed actions. It will meet regularly and will communicate with other sub-groups to ensure a joined-up approach across Working Group 2.
