2015, when they had increased 0.2% on the preceding year. On a total basis, sales increased 1.1%, compared to a 1.7% increase in February 2015.

  • Industrial production increased 0.2% year-on-year in January and was 0.3% higher on a monthly basis, according to the ONS. Manufacturing output decreased 0.1% compared with January 2015 but was 0.7% higher than in December.
  • In January, the UK’s deficit on trade in goods and services was £3.5 billion in January, narrowing from £3.7 billion in December and from £3.2 billion in January 2014, according to the ONS. Exports of goods decreased 5.8% year-on-year to £22.9 billion and imports decreased 6.3% to £33.2 billion, leaving a deficit of £10.3 billion.
  • Construction Update
    The ONS has published construction output data for January 2016. Overall, output decreased 0.2% compared to December and fell 0.8% year-on-year. Changes across the sectors are:

    • All new work fell 0.7% compared to December and 0.4% compared to January 2015
    • Public non-housing output increased 1.5% on a monthly basis and rose 4.3% on a yearly basis
    • Public housing output decreased 10.4% on a monthly basis and 20.1% on an annual basis
    • Private housing output increased 0.6% month-on-month and rose 4.8% year-on-year
    • Infrastructure output fell 8.6% compared to December and decreased 5.8% compared to January 2015
    • Output in the private commercial sector increased on a monthly basis and yearly basis by 4.7% and 2.1%, respectively
    • Industrial output increased 0.9% compared to December but fell 5.7% compared to January 2015
    • Public housing repair, maintenance and improvement (RM&I) output decreased 1.8% on a monthly basis and 5.6% on an annual basis
    • Private housing RM&I increased 5.2% month-on-month and 5.3% year-on-year
    • Non-housing R&M output decreased 1.5% on a monthly basis and 4.6% on an annual basis

    The ONS has published construction new orders data for 2015 Q4. Overall, orders decreased 0.5% compared to Q3 but increased 1.4% compared to 2014 Q4. Changes across sectors are as follows:

    • Public housing orders increased 46.5% compared to Q3, and 29.2% compared to 2014 Q4
    • Private housing orders increased on a quarterly basis by 7.9% and on a yearly basis by 4.5%
    • Public non-housing orders decreased on a quarterly basis by 6.1% and by 19.2% on an annual basis
    • Infrastructure orders decreased 27.8% compared to Q3, but rose 1.7% compared to 2014 Q4
    • Commercial orders increased 20.5% on a quarterly basis and 9.1% on a yearly basis
    • Industrial orders decreased 15.3% quarter-on-quarter and 6.3% compared to a year earlier

    Productivity in the Construction Supply Chain – CIOB Survey request

    The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) are looking to assess the issue of productivity in construction and how it could potentially be increased. The CIOB would like the views of the whole supply chain, not just the contracting element and have developed a short survey, which can be accessed here and the copies of the resulting report will be made available to CPA members.
