The construction industry recorded a twelfth consecutive quarter of growth in Q1, according to the Construction Trade Survey. Growth was reported by firms across the industry, with increased sales reported by product manufacturers at the start of the supply chain, and a rise in workloads and output on the ground reported by main and specialist contractors, SME builders and civil engineers.

Forward-looking indicators paint a mixed picture for the coming quarter and year, however, with signs that sentiment is being dampened by uncertainty in the lead-up to the EU referendum on 23 June.

For product manufacturers and civil engineers, sales expectations and new orders for the year ahead were positive, but more muted than in previous surveys, whilst main contractors’ order books were reported to be lower in every sector in Q1. Nevertheless, specialist contractors and SME builders registered an increase in enquiries during Q1, which suggests momentum remains.
