Build UK have just released a report to members on the work so far of the Industry Response Group.
On Monday 18th December, Dame Judith Hackitt published her interim report of the Independent Review which suggests a major overhaul of the Building Regulations systems, especially for tall buildings to create a risk based approach underpinned by cultural change in the industry.
Responding to the publication of the interim report, Suzannah Nichol MBE, Build UK’s Chief Executive said:
“Dame Judith Hackitt has engaged extensively with industry and the interim report of the Independent Review rightly identifies the need for wholesale change across building regulations alongside much needed cultural change within the industry. A focus on clarifying roles and responsibilities across a buildings life cycle, ensuring competence of individuals and examining product testing and marketing reflect the industry’s views. The construction industry stands ready to support the design and implementation of a regulatory regime fit for the future.”
Build UK, through the Industry Response Group, will continue to engage with the Independent Review as Dame Judith looks to publish her final report in the spring. It is clear that the industry will need to play a significant role in developing the framework for future Building Regulations and adopt the cultural changes necessary to deliver quality outcomes for construction clients.
Reminder: Support for Building Owners
Last week, DCLG published three new information notes for building owners:
To assist building owners of tall residential buildings with ACM cladding in assessing what measures they should consider taking to make their buildings safe. It contains a flow chart to guide building owners through the process of remediation and further information
Please continue to disseminate these notes to building owners.
Difficulties with insurance
Through the Industry Response Group, Build UK are increasingly hearing of difficulties obtaining both Professional Indemnity and business liability insurance products. Members have reported increases in premiums and limits on particular activities. The Industry Response Group is interested in gathering examples of the issues facing the industry so please send any examples to Laura Smith. All input will be considered anonymous.
